Blah, blah, blah
Yes, today I’ve got the “blahs”. It’s cool and overcast and I simply don’t feel motivated to do anything. Except write about how I don’t feel motivated…I should be doing crafty stuff to prepare for an upcoming show, but I’m not feeling creative. So what should I do? Well, I suppose I should take my own advice, which I’m going to share right now.Whenever I need to create but I’m not feeling especially “crafty”, one of the first things I do is go online and look at other people’s artwork. It can be very inspiring to see how talented other artists are and learn how they are utilizing their talents. Many times I’ll drag out all my art magazines like Somerset Studio and Cloth/Paper/Scissors. I *love* both of these publications because they share instructions on new techniques and have beautiful photographs of lots of different kinds of artwork. I also enjoy browsing through an art supply store or a place like Michael’s - - it’s great to go on a day when there’s no project that has to be finished. That way I can take my time and look around. Sometimes inspiration will strike in the paint or wood aisle.
Sometimes trying out a new technique is enough to get the creative juices flowing. Other times…. well, I just need to give myself a break from art. After a big craft show, especially, I will have at least a week of not even thinking about making anything new. It seems to rejuvenate me and keep me from burning out. Who wants making art to feel like a punishment, anyway?Try these techniques next time you have the blahs. Come back and comment if they helped. :-)
